Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has clarified that users currently cannot permanently delete their Threads profile once activated without deleting their underlying Instagram account. However, users can easily deactivate or hide their Threads profile through their personal account settings. Mosseri explained that users can hide their profile and shared content by deactivating their account: tap the Profile tab, open the Settings menu, select “Account,” tap “Deactivate profile,” and confirm by selecting “Deactivate Threads profile.” Alternatively, users can set their profile to private. Mosseri also noted that Threads is built directly on Instagram infrastructure, which is why users share a unified account across both services. Upcoming rollouts will introduce improved search functionality, better tag management, and streamlined editing tools for multimedia attachments prior to publishing. Meta recently launched Threads as a text-focused microblogging platform to rival Twitter (now X), achieving massive traction by onboarding more than 50 million users within its first 24 hours. The platform enables users to share short-form text posts, videos, GIFs, and cross-post directly from Instagram, alongside core social engagement tools such as liking, commenting, reposting, and sharing. However, early adopters quickly discovered that a standalone Threads profile cannot be permanently removed on its own. Deactivation remains the primary option, which temporarily hides the profile and its content without impacting the parent Instagram account. Instagram officials confirmed they are actively developing dedicated account management alternatives. In the interim, they advise users looking to step away to deactivate their Threads profiles or switch their accounts to private mode.
