A cybersecurity expert has warned that the rapid evolution of cyberattacks could cause significant damage to the global economy, particularly as such attacks may be capable of targeting multiple industrial systems simultaneously. This represents the highest level of threat to critical infrastructure and vital assets worldwide. Threats to industrial systems are also considered among the most significant cyber risks facing the Middle East. Robert M. Lee, CEO of Dragos, a global leader in industrial cybersecurity, noted that 2022 witnessed a dangerous advancement in malware targeting industrial systems. A new suite of malicious tools was discovered with the potential to target not only a single industrial sector in one coordinated attack, but potentially industrial systems across multiple sectors. He explained that the new threat, known as PIPEDREAM, represents one of the most serious threats to critical infrastructure worldwide because of its considerable potential to spread across numerous sectors and industries. Discussing the cyber threats facing the Middle East, the Dragos CEO stated that risks to industrial systems—including the possibility of increasingly sophisticated and scalable attacks—present a major concern for the region, particularly Saudi Arabia. He explained that industrial facilities in the Kingdom face heightened exposure to these complex and rapidly expanding attacks as digital transformation accelerates. However, the Saudi government and private-sector organizations recognize the importance of adopting cybersecurity solutions to protect industrial control systems (ICS) and operational technology (OT). He described Saudi Arabia’s approach in this area as “a highly mature position within the region.” He continued: “Saudi Arabia has a forward-looking vision for cybersecurity solutions, supported by the measures required to protect society from cyberattacks—measures that are broadly comparable with leading practices elsewhere in the world.” To protect industrial environments, Robert M. Lee advised technology leaders to adopt a dedicated approach tailored to the unique challenges and requirements of operational technology.
