US media outlets have reported that billionaire Elon Musk threatened to take away National Public Radio’s (NPR) Twitter account after the broadcaster refused to reactivate it, despite the restoration of its blue verification badge and the removal of the “state-affiliated media” label. NPR published details of an email from Musk warning that its account could be reassigned to another organization if it remained inactive. The broadcaster had announced plans to leave Twitter after its account was labeled “government-funded media.” The dispute has raised questions about whether Musk can withdraw NPR’s account under the platform’s policies. Users can keep their accounts active by logging in at least once every 30 days, while Twitter’s policies allow inactive accounts to be permanently deleted. However, inactive usernames cannot currently be released, and Twitter has yet to announce any policy updates clarifying when accounts may be taken away from users or media organizations.
