Google is continuously refining the user experience on Google Chrome for desktop, announcing that users will soon be able to access and interact with browser extension interfaces directly within the Side Panel, according to an update published on the official Chrome developer portal.

The Google Chrome Side Panel Feature

The desktop version of Google Chrome features a dedicated “Side Panel” that grants users instant access to bookmarks, the reading list, and browser customization options—directly alongside active tabs without disrupting the browsing workflow. To take advantage of this new Side Panel integration, developers must build their extensions on “Manifest V3”, Google’s latest extension platform standard designed to enhance performance, privacy, and security across the web.

The New Chrome Extension Side Panel API

To enable extensions to run natively within the side panel, Google introduced a dedicated Side Panel API engineered to seamlessly complement the user’s browsing journey. This interface enables developers to build companion experiences that sit comfortably alongside web content. On its developer portal, Google showcased a practical use case featuring a dictionary extension: users can highlight any term on a page, right-click, and launch the tool from the context menu. The dictionary companion instantly loads in the side panel, providing a concise definition without requiring users to leave their current tab. With this upcoming release, Chrome users gain a smoother, more personalized multitasking environment, while developers benefit from modern APIs that drive higher engagement. As digital workplaces and workflows evolve, this update marks another valuable step forward for Google Chrome as a leading enterprise and personal browser.
