Mozilla has announced its acquisition of Fakespot, a startup that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify fake reviews on e-commerce platforms. Mozilla plans to integrate Fakespot into Firefox as an extension, providing an A-to-F rating system that grades reviews based on their authenticity following analysis. In addition, Mozilla will introduce new exclusive features designed to help users make “informed purchasing decisions” on popular e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, Walmart, Shopify, and others. Following the acquisition, Mozilla reassured users that the extension would not become exclusive to Firefox. It will remain available across other browsers and mobile devices, with further improvements planned for the overall user experience. Mozilla’s decision to integrate AI-powered features into Firefox is intended to strengthen the browser’s share of the internet browser market. The move follows shortly after the launch of Mozilla.ai, a startup focused on developing open-source AI systems. Fake reviews remain a serious challenge for online shoppers, many of whom rely on customer feedback before making purchasing decisions. The rise of AI tools such as ChatGPT has made the issue more complex, as some companies use these technologies to generate large volumes of reviews for their products.
